A fireplace smokes into the room when something disrupts the draft — usually a blocked flue, a closed or partial damper, a cold chimney, wet wood, or a house too airtight to feed the fire. The good news: most causes are easy to identify and fix. Here are the six most common.
1. A blocked or dirty flue
Heavy creosote, a bird nest, or debris narrows the flue and chokes the draft, sending smoke back into the room. This is the first thing we check, and a sweep and inspection clears it. If your fireplace suddenly started smoking, a blockage is the likeliest cause.
2. The damper is not fully open
It sounds obvious, but a partly closed or stuck damper is a very common culprit. Make sure it is opened all the way before you light a fire. A damper that will not open fully, or is rusted, may need repair.
3. A cold chimney
A cold flue full of dense air resists the warm smoke trying to rise, so the first few minutes of a fire can back-puff. Priming the flue — holding a lit roll of newspaper up near the open damper for a minute to warm the air — often gets the draft started before you light the main fire.
4. Wet or unseasoned wood
Green or damp wood smolders instead of burning hot, producing far more smoke and a weaker draft. Burn only seasoned hardwood that has dried for six months to a year. A hotter, cleaner fire drafts better and coats your flue with less creosote.
5. A house that is too airtight
Modern, well-sealed homes can starve a fire of the air it needs to draft, especially with exhaust fans or an HVAC system running. Cracking a nearby window an inch gives the fire makeup air and often stops the smoking immediately.
6. Flue size, height, or a missing cap
Sometimes the problem is structural: a flue that is too short, too small for the fireplace opening, or missing a cap so wind pushes smoke back down. These need a professional look. During an inspection we can identify whether the fix is a cap, a different damper, or another adjustment.
