What exactly is creosote, and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is the tar-like residue that wood smoke leaves on the inside of your flue. It builds up in layers and is highly flammable — enough of it, plus a spark, is what causes a chimney fire. Removing it is the whole point of an annual sweep.
How can I tell if I have had a chimney fire?
Signs include a loud cracking or rumbling sound during a fire, a strong hot smell, puffy or honeycombed creosote, warped metal, cracked flue tiles, or pieces of debris in the firebox. If you suspect one, stop using the fireplace and get a Level 2 inspection before burning again.
When is the best time of year to book a chimney sweep?
Late summer and early fall are ideal — you beat the autumn rush and your fireplace is ready before the first cold night. That said, we sweep year-round, and spring is a fine time too because it clears out acidic soot before the humid months.
Do you offer same-day service?

How do I choose a good chimney sweep?
Look for a company that inspects before it quotes, explains what it finds with photos, carries insurance, and gives a clear price up front. Be wary of anyone who pressures you into major repairs on the spot or quotes a suspiciously cheap sweep and then finds expensive problems.
Do carbon monoxide detectors matter if I have a fireplace?
Yes — every home with any fuel-burning appliance should have working carbon monoxide detectors. A blocked or damaged chimney can let carbon monoxide back into the house, and CO is odorless. Detectors are a simple, essential backup to regular chimney maintenance.
Can I use my fireplace if it has not been swept in years?
It is risky. Years of unswept creosote greatly raise the chance of a chimney fire, and a long-unused chimney can hide blockages, nests or a cracked liner. Have it swept and inspected before you light the next fire.
Do gas fireplaces really need servicing?
Yes. Even without wood smoke, gas fireplaces collect dust and soot, the glass films over, the pilot can clog, and venting can develop problems. An annual tune-up keeps them safe and efficient. See our gas fireplace service.
