Why an annual sweep matters
Every time you burn wood, smoke leaves behind a sticky, tar-like residue called creosote on the inside of your flue. It builds up layer by layer, and it is highly flammable. When enough collects, a single stray ember can ignite it — that is a chimney fire, and it can crack your flue or spread into the house. Sweeping removes that fuel before it becomes a hazard.
A clean chimney also simply works better. Soot and creosote narrow the flue and choke the draft, which makes your fire harder to light, smokier, and less efficient. After a good sweep, your fireplace pulls air the way it should — less smoke rolling into the room, more heat going up and out the way it was designed to.
Signs it is time for a sweep
- A campfire or tar smell coming from the fireplace, especially in warm weather
- Black, flaky or shiny buildup you can see inside the firebox or flue
- Smoke pushing back into the room when you light a fire
- You burned a full season and have not had it cleaned since
- Animals, nesting or debris you have noticed near the top
How we sweep — cleanly
We treat your home like our own. Before we touch the fireplace we lay drop cloths, put on shoe covers, and set up a HEPA vacuum right at the opening so soot never drifts into your living room. Using rotary brushes and rods sized to your flue, we scrub the full length of the chimney from the firebox to the cap, then sweep the smoke shelf and firebox. When we are done, we vacuum up and haul the debris away. You should not be able to tell we were there — except that your fireplace is clean.
Wondering what it costs? We keep it honest and upfront — see our pricing page for the starting price of a sweep and inspection. Not sure whether you need a sweep or a full inspection first? Just call and describe what you are seeing.
