Why an annual sweep matters

Every time you burn wood, smoke leaves behind a sticky, tar-like residue called creosote on the inside of your flue. It builds up layer by layer, and it is highly flammable. When enough collects, a single stray ember can ignite it — that is a chimney fire, and it can crack your flue or spread into the house. Sweeping removes that fuel before it becomes a hazard.

A clean chimney also simply works better. Soot and creosote narrow the flue and choke the draft, which makes your fire harder to light, smokier, and less efficient. After a good sweep, your fireplace pulls air the way it should — less smoke rolling into the room, more heat going up and out the way it was designed to.

When we are done, we vacuum up and haul the debris away. You should not be able to tell we were there — except that your fireplace is clean.

How often does a chimney really need sweeping?
Once a year for a wood-burning fireplace or stove is the standard, alongside an annual inspection. If you burn most nights, a mid-winter sweep can be worth it too. Chimneys that see little use still need a yearly inspection even if they do not need sweeping.
How do I know if I have too much creosote?
If you can see shiny or flaky black buildup thicker than about an eighth of an inch, or you smell a strong tar odor, it is time. We measure it during the inspection and tell you honestly whether it needs cleaning now.
Is chimney sweeping messy?

Yes. We sweep open masonry fireplaces, wood stoves, inserts and their liners. Inserts sometimes take a little longer because we remove and reset components to reach the flue.
Do you sweep from the roof or from inside?
It depends on the chimney. Many sweeps are done from inside at the firebox with the HEPA vacuum running; some are better done top-down from the roof. We use whichever method keeps your home cleanest and does the most thorough job.
Will a sweep stop my fireplace from smoking?
Often, yes — a blocked or heavily coated flue is a common cause of a smoky fireplace. If the draft problem is from flue size, height or a missing cap, we will spot it during the inspection and explain the fix.
