The two parts that keep weather out of your chimney

At the very top of your chimney, two components do the quiet work of protecting everything below them. The crown is the concrete slab that seals the top of the masonry around the flue and slopes to shed water away. The cap is the metal cover with mesh sides that sits over the flue opening. When either one fails, water and wildlife get a free pass into your chimney — and the repairs downstream get expensive.

Why a good cap matters

A missing or rusted-out cap is one of the most common problems we see, and one of the cheapest to fix. Without it you get rain pouring straight down the flue (which rusts the damper and cracks the liner), birds and squirrels nesting inside, and hot embers free to drift onto your roof. A stainless-steel cap with a spark arrestor screen solves all of that at once, and stainless will not rust out the way cheap caps do.

Why the crown matters

The crown takes the full force of the weather. When it cracks — and Kansas freeze-thaw winters crack them — water seeps into the top of the chimney and works down through the masonry, accelerating every other kind of damage. How do I know if my crown is failing?
Look for cracks in the concrete slab at the top, pieces breaking away, or water stains and damage appearing below. We can photograph it during any sweep or inspection so you can see it yourself.
Do I need a stainless-steel cap, or is a cheaper one fine?
Stainless (or copper) is worth it. Galvanized caps rust out in a few years and have to be replaced; a stainless cap resists rust and typically carries a long warranty, so it is cheaper over time.
There is an animal in my chimney — can a cap prevent that?
Yes. A properly fitted cap with mesh sides keeps birds, squirrels and raccoons from getting in. If something is already nesting, we clear it first, then cap the flue to keep it from happening again.
Can a cracked crown be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Minor cracks can often be sealed with a flexible, waterproof crown coating that flexes with temperature swings. A crown that is badly broken or spalling needs to be rebuilt. We recommend the least-invasive fix that will actually last.
Will a cap stop my chimney from leaking?
